In Season 1 of the Magnum PI reboot, Jay Hernandez wore man Aloha shirts but did not wear any of the shirts Tom Selleck wore in the original series. We believe this was no accident. It might be considered disrespectful for the new show to wear some of the original Magnum PI shirts like it's no big deal. Now that we're midway through the second season, Magnum is starting to wear shirts from the original show. In Season 2, Episode 8 "He Came by Night", Jay Hernandez wore both the Midnight Bamboo shirt and the orignal Jungle Bird Magnum PI shirts.
In Episode 10 "Blood Brothers", the new Magnum wears another shirt worn by Tom Selleck back in 80s show. This time, it is Star Orchid (aka Magnum Orchid).
According to Tim Smith, owner of Pacific Clothing Company which makes this shirt, this shirt used to come in 7 different colors back in the 80s. Tom Selleck wore several colors in the series. The print was also tweaked by making the flowers slightly farther apart. After this change, the shirts grew in popularity. If you bought one of the shirts in the 80s, you truly have a collector's item since that old version of the Star Orchid print is no longer in production. The only version in production now is the current version and only in black.
This shirt is also one of our most popular shirts. After the red Magnum PI shirt, this shirt is usually the second or third most popular Magnum PI shirt at any given time. It trades spots with the black Jungle Bird Magnum PI shirt. We have heard that Magnum will wear more shirts this season that Tom Selleck wore in the original series. Given the number of other Magnum PI prints the show's wardrobe crew has acquired for filming, we believe this is also not an accident. And that's fine with us. We look forward to see these shirts on TV since we literally see them everyday at the office. Aloha!
