Fans of the Detroit Tigers baseball team celebrate an annual “Magnum, P.I. Day” at their home stadium, Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan. In the TV series, Thomas Magnum often wore a Detroit Tigers baseball cap. In the show, Magnum’s late father was a big Tigers fan, so the team and baseball cap had sentimental value to him. Actor Tom Selleck also famously wore the red Jungle Bird Hawaiian shirt on the show which went on to simply referred to as the “Magnum PI shirt”. Together, the Detroit Tigers baseball cap and the red Jungle Bird Hawaiian shirt have become an iconic look of Magnum PI and is instantly recognized by fans of the show around the world.
The Annual “Magnum PI” Day at Comerica Park began in 2008. It is a fan-based event where fans dress up as Thomas Magnum with the Tigers cap, Jungle Bird shirt, fake (or real) mustache, and aviator sunglasses to celebrate the show and Tom Selleck’s connection to the Detroit Tigers.
Not only did Thomas Magnum have ties to Detroit in the show, but actor Tom Selleck himself is a Detroit native and has been a Tigers fan ever since he was a kid. Back in 1991 as he prepared for his role in the movie “Mr. Baseball”, Selleck actually got to spend a few weeks in spring training with the Detroit Tigers and even played in a pre-season game.
So, the connection between the Detroit Tigers, Thomas Magnum, and Tom Selleck runs deep. We love how Thomas Magnum’s love of Detroit and the Tigers mirrored Tom Selleck’s feelings in real life. It is no wonder that fans look forward to Magnum PI day every year and it is something we can get excited about too!
