What to Wear to a Summer Wedding

What to Wear to a Summer Wedding

Summer is one of the most popular times of year for a wedding, and it’s no surprise why. Who wants to walk through snow or slush in dress shoes or high heels? The warmer weather also offers the opportunity for couples to hold their nuptials outdoors, whether on a patio, a lush yard or a beach.

It’s fairly common that the dress code will be more relaxed in the summer, and there might be confusion about what’s acceptable to wear. Is it OK to wear an Aloha print shirt? Even if the wedding invitation calls for a more formal dress code, you might be surprised how many ways there are to include some fun and light-heartedness in your outfit. Remember, while a wedding is a momentous occasion, it’s also supposed to be fun. You can usually reflect that in the clothing you choose.

Casual

If your wedding invitation calls for “casual” dress, that may or may not include jeans or shorts. Business casual is a better bet, but business casual does not have to mean business boring. For women, an easy-fit sundress with a flowery print is an especially good choice for the summer. Men should feel free to pair the traditional look of khakis with any number of bright Aloha-style Hawaiian shirts.

Dressy Casual

If “semi-formal” or “dressy casual” is the rule, it’s a cross between casual and formal. Men would normally wear a suit, or even just a dress shirt and tie. Women may have more room to express themselves. They could wear a floral dress that’s mid-length or long. For extra style, it could be paired with a light sweater or a wrap.

Beach Formal

“Beach formal” is a dress code often seen on wedding invitations. The idea is to look nice, but it’s also an invitation to mix in some fun. Men could wear a summer suit with a linen shirt with no tie and linen pants. To add a little more beach to the look, men could try a dressier, subtle Aloha shirt. Women should wear a formal summer sundress and flat sandals.

Cocktail

A “cocktail attire” dress code is a step towards a more formal look. Men should wear a suit and tie in lighter colors that are good for beating the summer sun. Women should wear a long dress or a dressy suit or jumpsuit. Women especially have freedom to choose from among a wide variety of colors and styles.

Formal

A “formal” or “black tie optional” event is just one step away from a black-tie event. Men should wear a tuxedo or a dark suit and tie. Women can wear a dressy suit, a long evening dress or formal cocktail dress. A top-quality Aloha-patterned dress can be appropriate for combining whimsy with formality.

Black Tie

A “black tie” wedding is normally an indoor evening affair. Men should wear a tuxedo and a black bow tie. Women should wear a cocktail dress or a long evening gown.

For a more formal affair, the time to have Aloha fun with your outfit could be the reception or the afterparty.
