The palaka print is considered a direct predecessor to the modern Aloha shirt. Unlike modern aloha shirts that use fashionable lightweight materials, palaka shirt were made of heavy yarn-dyed cotton twill in a disctinct checkerboard pattern. By the late 1800s and early 1900s, palaka shirts served as the standard rugged workwear for planation workers throughout the islands.
